Scalene Strain

The scalenes are three thin muscles on the side of the neck that connect the upper ribs to the cervical spine. They help lift the ribs when you breathe and bend the neck to the side. In a rear-end crash, the head snaps backward and the scalenes get stretched hard. The fibers tear, and because nerves and blood vessels pass through this muscle group, swelling here can also pinch nearby nerves going to the arm.

Normal Scalene Group

Stage · Normal

  • Three thin muscles on the side of the neck are intact and healthy
  • Normal strength for lifting the ribs and bending the neck to the side
  • No pain, swelling, or tenderness along the side of the neck
  • Nerves and blood vessels pass freely through the muscle group
