Sternocleidomastoid Damage in a Rear-End Collision

About Sternocleidomastoid Damage
The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is the big strap muscle that runs down the side of your neck, from behind your ear to your collarbone. In a rear-end crash, your head snaps backward and then whips forward. The SCM gets yanked hard in both directions, and tiny fibers inside the muscle rip apart.
